I believe that the secret message can be many different things. I especially liked your line "I like that my clothes give off the appearance that I am upper class, whether I actually am or not," because I think feelings vary based on person and based on the day. One day their reasoning could be to show off their designer jeans, but then the next they could be wearing them simply because they look good.
